High Tea with Tenzin Tsephel: Content Writer

Tenzin is a brilliant content writer who currently works remotely in Madison, Wisconsin for the company Brand Connections. She spearheads the beauty sector, developing content for Target (ugh, a dream). Her passion for writing began early on in her childhood, writing stories and letters for loved ones, and has always enjoyed sharing with others. Today, we are having tea in the historic BG Restaurant on the Upper West Side while she visits NYC – let’s see what else she has to share.

It was a beautiful sunny day, surrounded by other busy New Yorkers. The restaurant sits on the 7th floor, with a now wintry view of Central Park. We sit and chat a bit, enjoying our small bites and tea. Reminiscing our last 10 years of friendship. Tenzin is hilarious.

I have always admired how true you are to yourself.  You have such a presence both online and irl and it’s been amazing watching you grow. How has your work ethic contributed to your overall success as a writer?

Thank you! I remember talking about our love for writing together years ago. I definitely have my work ethic to thank for where I am today – especially knowing that I have so much more I want to accomplish! Like most writers, my work ethic blossomed by starting my own blog. Writing about anything that readers could find relatable. But when I realized how much I enjoyed writing lifestyle topics, my work truly began. The articles that I had written for fun allowed me to accept remote opportunities, giving me more work and more exposure. I would work with teams and we’d brainstorm our individual topics and trending news. These were unpaid roles I took, but sometimes that’s what it takes early in your career – in order to really grow your skills and experience. At that time, I saw unpaid work as a ladder for paid work later on. I won’t ever regret that either, since it helped grow my professional skills and business knowledge. I then found a deeper purpose which led me to grow away from those roles, knowing I was becoming a stronger writer. I found paid positions and it made me happy knowing this is work I create that gets noticed and appreciated. All of this led me to start holding remote roles writing for a variety of platforms!

It’s inspiring to see how hard work pays off, especially in an industry where we sometimes have to open doors for ourselves. How much has your professional work developed from where you started?

I worked for different industries at the same time and eventually committed myself to the beauty and skincare industry. I decided to combine by passion for with my love for social media too, so I’m now writing and creating content full time!

What keeps you inspired?

Side hustles I’ve held really helped allow me to see my own creativity and build my personal brand voice. I guess you could say my own work is what kept me inspired, just writing because I love it. I loved being able to see articles I’ve created be published on those platforms for others to read and enjoy. The more it would happen, the more I didn’t want it to stop. It’s the dopamine rush for me!

Truly! How do you like to celebrate yourself? I know a Libra like yourself has a killer self-care mindset, especially when you have to prevent burnout.

To celebrate myself I really value self-care days; that’s what my Sundays have been becoming for me. I always start my Sundays off with a good skincare routine, which also includes a face mask and under eye patches. The rest of my Sundays are spent with winding down from the week, maybe a little online shopping here and there, and anything else that calms my mind. I also splurge on monthly facials from a local Med Spa for the love of skincare and a relaxing experience.

Skin care is self care! If there is one piece of advice you could give the other artists WFH for the new year, what would it be?

Don’t stress over work you’re not passionate about. If you find yourself working in a field that no longer serves or interests you, take the time now to seek out work that does speak to you so you can get. Out. Now. Seek a career that inspires you and reflects who you are and what you feel like you’re meant to do. I spent three years post grad working a job I knew I didn’t love, and now do content management full time for a company I do love. It was because I took on those side hustles growing my writing skills the entire time, that I get to finally enjoy a comfortable job that doesn’t feel draining. It almost feels natural, and I think that’s something special to pay attention to. Especially if you are able to WFH, you can find countless opportunities and have the freedom to live or work almost anywhere. Nothing is holding you back. Hard work will always pay off no matter what you do!
